Severe storms in North Texas led organizers to cancel the remainder of Sunday night's Carry the Load Dallas Memorial March, shortening a significant tribute to fallen military service members.
The two-day event at Reverchon Park attracted hundreds of attendees before the weather necessitated an early conclusion. The organizers closed the event at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday due to safety concerns regarding the forecasted overnight storms.
Established in 2011 by two former Navy SEALs in Dallas, the march has evolved into a national movement. Participants stroll to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in service, reminding them of the true significance of Memorial Day.
"It's all too common to ask people about their plans for Memorial Day weekend, yet rarely do they acknowledge that we are here to honor the lives of those who deemed us worthy of their sacrifice," stated Hallie Johnston with Carry the Load.
Billboards showcased images and narratives of fallen service members throughout the six-mile loop.
A tribute was held for Cody Board, a soldier who lost his life in Afghanistan in 2010 at the young age of 19. His brother, Aaron Board, attended to pay tribute to Cody's memory.
"When you open that door and see the men in uniform, you realize it's not a good sign," Aaron reflected, remembering the moment he found out about Cody’s death. "Knowing that people will see his face... that his name will endure, truly means everything."
Regardless of the weather, the message remained clear: those who serve and sacrifice will always be remembered.
