A person died early Wednesday morning near the LBJ Freeway and Hillcrest Road, close to White Rock Creek. This is an area that has been hit hard by the rising water. Around 5:30 a.m., when emergency workers were able to get to a submerged car, the Dallas County Medical Examiner confirmed the death.
The National Weather Service had issued a Flash Flood Warning for Dallas County until 3 a.m. because of the heavy rain that clogged drains and flooded roads.
Rescues in the water all over the city
Dallas Fire-Rescue said they were called to five different water rescues overnight. Rescue workers launched a boat under the I-635 bridge to help two cars that were stuck in rising water, as seen on NBC 5. Two people got out of one of the cars, but the second car was too deep to check safely before it was fully submerged.
In other incidents, several cars were stuck, and one driver was stuck and needed help.
The government said that in some places, more than four inches of rain fell in just a few hours, which caused dangerous flash floods.
Dallas Fire-Rescue stressed that their crews are trained all year to do quick water rescues. They run two specialized water stations and give other units boats and flood gear so they can act quickly to bad weather.
Authorities keep saying, "Turn around, don't drown," to stress how important it is to be safe in floods.
Never drive on flooded roads, even if the water seems small. It can rise quickly and carry cars away.
