A software company has initiated a formal inquiry and temporarily suspended its CEO following a viral video from a Coldplay concert that sparked speculation about a possible affair involving company executives.
During a performance by Coldplay in Boston on Wednesday night, a moment was captured on video featuring Andy Byron, the CEO of Astronomer, affectionately embracing Kristin Cabot, the company’s Chief People Officer, just before they appeared on the venue’s “kiss cam.” As their faces appeared on screens, Cabot shielded her face with her hands while Byron swiftly released his grip, crouching down in what seemed like a bid to evade notice.
The uncomfortable incident quickly gained traction online, spreading rapidly across platforms like TikTok and X, as users began to speculate on the dynamics of the relationship between the married CEO and the HR executive.
In response to public scrutiny, Astronomer took to LinkedIn to share a statement affirming, “Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding.” It is anticipated that our leaders will exemplify the highest levels of conduct and accountability.
On Friday, the company announced that its board had initiated a formal internal investigation regarding the incident. “The Board of Directors has launched a formal inquiry into this issue, and we will provide further information soon,” the company stated.
In a follow-up announcement, the Astronomer revealed that Byron has been put on leave, with co-founder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy taking over as interim CEO.
In light of recent online speculation, the company has clarified that Byron has not made any personal comments regarding the incident. Ry Walker, the former CEO and co-founder of Astronomer, shared his thoughts on X, expressing his surprise: “I’ve found Andy to be highly competent…” I consistently receive commendations from the team regarding his leadership. This is certainly an unexpected turn of events that many will find disappointing.
Cabot has yet to release a statement, leaving uncertainty about whether she will encounter any disciplinary measures.
Established in 2018, Astronomer offers data orchestration tools based on the open-source Apache Airflow and has remained largely under the radar until recent developments. As the inquiry continues, the organization has announced that it will provide additional updates "as appropriate" in the coming days.
