Texas Residents Can Apply to Public Colleges for Free Oct. 13–19

This week marks the inaugural Free College Application Week in Texas, during which students can submit applications to in-state public colleges and universities at no cost from October 13 to 19.

A recent initiative spearheaded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) eliminates application fees for first-time, transfer, and returning students applying through ApplyTexas, the statewide college application portal. The waiver period is set to begin at 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, and will conclude at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.

A new initiative has been launched following the passage of Senate Bill 2231 earlier this year, designating the entire month of October as an annual Free College Application Week.

Governor Greg Abbott lauded the initiative, describing it as a commitment to the state's future workforce. "By supporting our students today, we are laying the groundwork for a more robust Texas in the future," Abbott expressed.

Wynn Rosser, the Texas Higher Education Commissioner, expressed that the initiative to waive application fees provides more opportunities for students to pursue higher education.

The waiver is exclusively available to Texas residents seeking admission to undergraduate programs at public institutions. This policy applies only to in-state, domestic, and undergraduate applicants.
