President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the Republican Party will hold its first national convention during a midterm election year, bringing a two-day gathering to Dallas in September as Republicans prepare for critical congressional and statewide races.
The convention is scheduled for Sept. 9-10 and marks the first time the Republican Party has organized a national convention outside a presidential election cycle. Trump described the event on Truth Social as a "truly historic event" and said Dallas would "take center stage" as Republicans celebrate the party's agenda and campaign ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The announcement comes as Republicans defend narrow majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate. Midterm elections have historically been challenging for the president's party, making voter turnout a key focus for GOP leaders.
Trump said the convention will feature "hardworking Americans," entrepreneurs, manufacturers, first responders, and business leaders while promoting the administration's "America First" agenda. He also promised entertainment, describing the gathering as "a rally like none other."
Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters said the event will highlight the party's accomplishments and unite Republicans ahead of the fall elections.
"This convention will be a Trumpapalooza, where we will showcase the America First agenda," Gruters said in a statement.
Texas is expected to play a significant role in the 2026 midterm elections, with closely watched congressional races and a competitive U.S. Senate contest drawing national attention. Recent polling has shown a closely contested Senate race, though election outcomes remain uncertain months before voters cast their ballots.
The Republican National Committee has said it will announce additional details, including speakers, programming, and venue information, in the coming weeks. Democrats have no plans to hold a comparable national midterm convention.
