A three-story apartment building at a Mesquite apartment complex was declared a total loss after a fire swept through the structure Wednesday afternoon, forcing firefighters to retreat when part of the building collapsed.

The fire was reported around 12:30 p.m. at the Westover on 80 apartment complex near U.S. Highway 80 and Town East Boulevard, according to fire officials.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames already breaking through the roof of the building, indicating the fire had spread extensively before crews reached the scene.

Firefighters initially launched an aggressive interior attack to contain the blaze. However, as fire conditions worsened and a portion of the building collapsed, incident commanders ordered crews to withdraw and transition to a defensive strategy, battling the fire from outside the structure.

Authorities said the building was ultimately deemed a total loss.

No injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.

Officials have not released information on how many apartment units were affected or whether anyone was displaced by the fire.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
