Ted Turner, the bold entrepreneur known for founding CNN and revolutionizing the 24-hour cable news landscape, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 87, as confirmed by Turner Enterprises.
Turner passed away in the presence of family, according to a statement from the company. In recent years, he encountered a decline in health, notably battling Lewy body dementia.
In a groundbreaking move for the media landscape, Turner established CNN in 1980, pioneering the first all-news television network at a time when most Americans relied on scheduled news broadcasts. This shift transformed audience engagement with news and established a benchmark for ongoing international reporting.
“I knew I had to strike decisively and act with remarkable speed,” Turner remarked in a 2016 interview, reminiscing about the formative years of CNN.
Once regarded by critics as the “chicken noodle network,” CNN demonstrated its significance during pivotal global events, notably the Gulf War in 1991. While many evacuated, its reporters stayed in بغداد, providing real-time coverage that set a new standard for modern war reporting.
Turner transformed his father's billboard business into a vast media empire, establishing the Turner Broadcasting System, which encompassed various cable networks, sports franchises, and film studios. In 1996, a significant media transaction took place when he sold the company to Time Warner.
In addition to his broadcasting achievements, Turner gained recognition for his philanthropic efforts and commitment to environmental causes. Donors have contributed a staggering $1 billion to United Nations initiatives, alongside significant investments in conservation efforts. This includes managing over 2 million acres of land and overseeing the largest bison herd in the United States.
His vibrant personality earned him monikers such as “Captain Outrageous” and “The Mouth of the South.” Turner once remarked, “If only I had a little humility, I’d be perfect.”
Turner made his mark in the sports world by owning professional teams in Atlanta and participating in yacht racing, notably securing victory in the 1977 America’s Cup.
Public figures nationwide have expressed their reactions to his passing. President Donald Trump praised Turner as “one of the Greats of All Time,” noting his constant dedication to championing noble causes.
In the following years, Turner withdrew from public life, focusing his efforts on philanthropy and land management.
His impact on journalism is lasting, as CNN's approach to continuous news coverage has become the industry norm.
