An 18-year-old has been charged with murder after a tragic incident involving the fatal stabbing of another teenager at Kuykendall Stadium during a track meet in early April. Karmelo Anthony, aged 17 during the incident, is now facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.
A grand jury in Collin County issued the indictment on Tuesday, following Anthony's arrest on April 2, several months prior. He has now been released on a lower bond and remains under house arrest. If found guilty, Anthony could be sentenced to anywhere from 5 to 99 years, or potentially life behind bars. In Texas, individuals who are 17 years old are treated as adults in the criminal justice system.
Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis has confirmed the indictment, recognizing the significant emotional impact this case has had on the community. “Incidents of this nature during a school event deeply unsettle the community,” Willis stated. “We are dedicated to a consistent and principled approach.”
Austin Metcalf’s father, Jeff Metcalf, shared a sense of measured optimism: “I believe justice will be served.” However, it will not change the fact that my son is gone.
Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, expressed that his client maintains a strong belief in receiving a just trial. “We anticipate that the complete narrative will reveal the presence of reasonable doubt and that Karmelo might have acted in self-defense,” Howard stated.
Frisco ISD made public surveillance footage in June that captured the events leading up to and following the stabbing incident. The video, taken from a distance, revealed activity under a tent near the 50-yard line, accompanied by a swift emergency response.
The affidavit reveals that following his arrest, Anthony confessed to the police, stating, “I did it,” while asserting that Metcalf had physically confronted him despite warnings against such actions.
The case will move forward once a trial judge is assigned. The date for the court proceedings remains undetermined at this time.
