Amid escalating violent crime, business owners in Dallas’ Deep Ellum district are uniting to support new safety initiatives, such as earlier street closures and a revamped community safety plan, aiming to bring tranquility back to the city’s iconic entertainment area.

The Dallas police are intensifying their enforcement efforts in response to the increasing reports of assaults and shootings circulating on social media.

This weekend marks a significant development in Deep Ellum, as street closures will now commence at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, shifting the timeline two hours earlier than previously established. Although vehicles will be prohibited, pedestrians are encouraged to come through.

Allen Falkner, the proprietor of The Nines dance club located on Main Street, reports that the recent surge in violence is one of the most severe he has witnessed since the club's inception in 2014.

“In the past decade, I’ve observed it change,” Falkner remarked. “At this moment, the situation appears to be more dire than I have ever witnessed.”

Falkner, echoing the sentiments of numerous business owners, embraces the newly implemented safety measures, particularly the extended closures now encompassing Indiana Street and the bolstered police presence. However, he underscores that merely closing streets is insufficient.

“A perception has emerged—that Deep Ellum is associated with violence.” “The individuals creating disturbances do not belong to our community,” he stated. “They arrive solely to create disturbances.”

Falkner asserts that achieving lasting change will necessitate a partnership among the city, landlords, and venue operators.

“There is a pressing need to close down businesses that are causing issues.” “Landlords must broaden their leasing demographics, and there is an urgent need for enhanced security measures,” he stated.

The Deep Ellum Foundation is developing an updated safety strategy, known as Community Safety Plan 2.0, and is currently seeking public feedback through a survey.

In a recent statement, Executive Director Stephanie Keller Hudiburg emphasized the collaborative efforts underway, stating, “We are engaging with stakeholders throughout our community and joining forces with the city to tackle current challenges and refine our plan to cater to both present and future needs.”

In the face of ongoing difficulties, Falkner remains optimistic.

“We must stand up for Deep Ellum.” Our goal is for it to endure. “Our commitment is unwavering, and no matter the challenges we face, we will ensure Deep Ellum thrives,” he stated.
