Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced to 30 days in jail. It will serve five years of probation after pleading guilty on Thursday to two felony charges stemming from a high-speed hit-and-run incident on a Dallas highway that occurred in March 2024.

Rice, 25, acknowledged his involvement in charges related to a collision that resulted in serious bodily injury and racing on a highway that caused physical injury, both classified as third-degree felonies. Authorities reported that Rice was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Urus, speeding at 119 mph moments before causing a chain-reaction collision on U.S. Highway 75, resulting in injuries to four individuals.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office reported that Rice executed “multiple aggressive maneuvers” during rush-hour traffic before ultimately losing control of his vehicle. After the crash, Rice and other passengers from the vehicles involved left the scene on foot. Footage from a dashcam revealed the intense crash, with bystanders leaving the scene without attending to those affected.

Rice was initially charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision resulting in serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision resulting in injury. According to the plea agreement, the additional charges were dropped. He has been mandated to compensate more than $115,000 for the medical costs faced by the victims.

“This incident has had a profound impact on Rice,” stated his attorney, Texas State Senator Royce West, who noted that the wide receiver could be looking at a decade behind bars if he breaches the conditions of his probation.

In a statement, Rice conveyed his regret: “There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused…” I sincerely regret the impact my actions have had on the lives of innocent drivers and their families.

Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot criticized Rice’s actions as irresponsible, emphasizing, “A vehicle in the wrong hands can be as dangerous as any weapon.”

The timeline for when Rice will begin his jail sentence is still uncertain. West indicated that it will probably align with Rice’s NFL timetable. The Chiefs' training camp is set to kick off on July 21, with Rice expected to arrive on time.

Rice faced a significant setback during the 2024 NFL season due to a knee injury, but there are optimistic projections for his return in 2025. There has been no official word from the NFL regarding disciplinary measures, but a suspension seems probable.

Rice is currently facing a minimum of two civil lawsuits related to the crash, and the trial dates may be postponed due to a special legislative session taking place in Texas.
