It is unusually hot in Texas right now, and the National Weather Service says that strong thunderstorms could hit the whole state this weekend. A cold front is coming into North Texas at the same time as the heat wave, making it possible for big hail and damaging winds. Cities like Houston and College Station are already setting records for heat waves.

The front started moving into North Texas on Thursday and will likely stay around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex until Friday, increasing the chances of storms. Damage-causing wind gusts and big hail are the main dangers, especially in the afternoon and evening.

The NWS says more severe weather could hit central Texas on Saturday evening along the dry line and move east into the DFW area. After dark, storms should calm down, but there is a chance of rain and storms again on Sunday, especially northwest of Dallas-Fort Worth.

Even with the storms, North Texas will still have warmer-than-normal temperatures, with highs in the low 90s during the day and lows near 70 degrees at night.

In the meantime, Southeast Texas will stay dry through the weekend, but it will still be hot. The highs will remain in the low to mid-90s, and the lows at night will stay in the upper 70s. The National Weather Service in Houston said that average high temperatures in the mid-90s don't usually happen until next month. This early heat wave is therefore "rather unusual."

In a jokey statement about Thursday's record-breaking heat, the office said, "We did the math!"

People in Texas are being told to pay attention to how the weather is changing, monitor local forecasts, and prepare for high temperatures and storms that could be very bad.
