A 21-year-old man is in custody after a shooting at a Dallas baby shower left one person dead and injured three others late Saturday, according to police. The violence unfolded at Verbazend Creations & Event Venue in the city’s Red Bird area, where family members had gathered to celebrate an upcoming birth.

Relatives identified the victim as 33-year-old Joseph “JoJo” Premeaux of Houston, who had driven to Dallas to attend his niece’s baby shower. His older brother, Paul Premeaux, said the family is struggling to comprehend the loss. “It just feels unreal,” he said, describing his brother as someone known for his smile and sense of humor.

Police said a fight broke out inside the event space after a guest invited a group of men to join the gathering. During the altercation, one of the men opened fire. Family members told reporters that JoJo Premeaux was shot in the chest while trying to shield his wife.

Authorities said five people in total were shot, including the alleged gunman. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Jesus Torres, was hospitalized for treatment and later booked into the Dallas County Jail on a murder charge. Police have not released additional details about what led to the dispute.

Among the wounded is Premeaux’s cousin, Hector, who was shot in the head and remains in critical condition at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Family members described him as “the life of the party” before the shooting occurred. “We took one loss,” Paul Premeaux said. “We just pray it’s not going to be two.”

Two other victims suffered injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

Loved ones said JoJo Premeaux worked as a plumber and was a devoted father of three. The loss comes as the family continues to cope with prior hardship; relatives said they previously lost their oldest brother and now face another burial just weeks before Christmas.

Video recorded moments before the shooting shows Premeaux laughing with family members, unaware of the confrontation about to unfold.

Police said the investigation remains open and that detectives are reviewing witness statements and video evidence. No further updates have been released regarding possible additional charges or the conditions of the surviving victims.
