Forecasts from the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) say that Dallas residents will have to deal with stormy clouds and smoggy air this first week of June.
Yesterday was the first day of the week, and there is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 p.m. This pattern of rain is likely to continue every day until Saturday. Temperatures in Texas are expected to range from the upper 80s to the low 90s, which is typical for early summer.
Not only is the weather bad, but air pollution is also worsening. The TCEQ has issued an Ozone Action Day message for the Dallas-Fort Worth area, alerting residents to conditions that are conducive to higher levels of ozone pollution. People with asthma, lung problems, or heart disease are more likely to get hurt by this.
North Texans are encouraged to help reduce pollution by carpooling, avoiding drive-thrus, conserving energy, and maintaining their cars in good condition. Even small things, such as bringing your lunch instead of going out, can help reduce the pollution that contributes to ozone buildup.
Some people may be glad for the rains because they cool things down, but ozone levels can stay high even when there are clouds. And with winds gusting up to 25 mph expected on Tuesday and sunshine coming back by the weekend, the conditions could stay good for smog to form.
The weather forecast serves as a timely reminder that air quality and weather are closely related, and that individuals can contribute to the Earth's well-being this week by making informed decisions.
